First-ever Alumni Association All-Class Gathering exceeds all expectations
When the AAHS Alumni Council accepted a suggestion from an out-of-town graduate three years ago, little did they know they were embarking on a signature event that would be so enthusiastically-received.
Organizing a weekend that could be enjoyed by alumni of all ages was the prime objective and the response was phenomenal.
Only one of the All-Class Gathering’s activities required an advance ticket purchase - the dinner and dance at the Jaffa Shrine Center on Saturday, October 4. From the time the first reservation form appeared in last spring’s Alumnotes newsletter, requests for tickets began flooding in from all over the nation. By August 25, the 800 available seats were gone. More than 130 requests for tickets were returned.
“I have no doubt we could have sold 1,500 or more tickets had the banquet hall been larger,” noted Phil Steele ‘56, chairman of the weekend’s activities. “Our only regret was that we could not fill all of the requests for tickets.”
Those who were lucky enough to get tickets had nothing but positive things to say about the food, the atmosphere at the newly-renovated Jaffa Shrine Center, the dance music provided by Kent Martin '74 and the opportunity to visit with fellow AHS alumni of all ages. Executive Director Tom Bradley ‘67 said, “For the first time since we re-organized in 1989, many of our graduates finally realized the importance of being a member of our Association.
“More than a few disgruntled alumni called this summer wondering why they knew nothing about this event,” he went on to say. “It gave me a great deal of pleasure to tell then that our dues-paying members read about the ACG in three consecutive newsletters!”
When will the next ACG be? The Alumni Council will carefully evaluate the entire weekend and determine if and when another such event will be held. Look for more information in future newsletters and in our bi-weekly broadcast e-mails. |
