Public Meeting held May 22, 2008

Cultural diversity is growing among children in public schools. The Altoona Area School District is home to children from eight countries other than the U.S. To meet their learning needs and to comply with state and federal regulations, the district provides instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL).

An ESL Public Advisory Meeting, the second of the year, was held on Thursday, May 22 from 4-5 p.m. in the Altoona Area School District's boardroom, located in the basement of the high school Annex. The purpose was to share with the public the exciting activities and upcoming changes to the district's ESL program.

The most significant achievement of the school year involved a majority of English Language Learners in personal scrapbooking projects that allowed them to share their culture with members of the school district. To view the digital versions of their final projects, click above on Special Projects.

Elementary English Language Learners will experience a big change in the 2008-09 school year. In order to provide them with increased ESL instructional time and increase interaction with other ELLs, all students in grades K-6 will attend Pleasant Valley Elementary School. Transportation will be provided. Dr. Judy DiLeo, the ESL teacher, will have a classroom space in which to teach her students.
