The Altoona Area School District encompasses 59.6 square miles in the city of Altoona, Logan Township and a small portion of Tyrone Township. With 7,900 students, Altoona Area is one of Pennsylvania's largest school districts.

Achievements
* Standard and Poor's named Altoona Area as one of the state's outperforming school districts from 2003-2006
* In 2007, Expansion Management rated Altoona Area as a 4-Star Public School Metrowide. Only 72 school district in the nation were rated as such.
* McAuliffe Heights-Irving, the AASD's magnet program, was one of only 284 school in the United States selected as a 2007 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School.
* A total of 39 Altoona Area High School seniors have been named National Merit Scholarship Finalists in recent years.
* Another 94 students have earned Commended Student status since 1990.
* In 2007, 23 AAHS students were recognized by the College Board for achieving high scores on Advanced Placement tests.
* The AAHS marching band, concert band, wind ensemble, jazz bands, vocal ensemble and concert chorus all received superior ratings at the Myrtle Beach (SC) Festivals of Music.
* Nine Altoona Area High School musicians earned All-State recognition.
*Five students from the Keith JHS Technology Student Association advanced to the national finals in Orlando, FL, in June 2008.
* The AAHS Mr. Lion track and field team won the 2008 PIAA Class AAA state championship.
* Since 1989, the AASD Foundation has been able to allocate more than $900,000 for innovative classroom projects thanks to generous donations from alumni, local businesses, AASD employees and retired staff.
* More than 100 school districts in Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio have used the AASD Foundation as their model.
* The school district boasts a growing national Alumni Association comprised of more than 4,000 members.
* Countless proactive security measures and a strong Student Code of Conduct have helped maintain a safe learning environment.
