AAJHS Water Break Update

Monday, February 9, 2026

Update:  5:30 PM

At approximately 8:45 this morning, the Altoona Area Junior High School experienced a major water break with the fire sprinkler system. The break led to flooding to a significant portion of the first floor of the academic building. Students and staff were rerouted to the high school as they arrived at school. Life safety systems, some power, and other utilities were off line as the break was addressed. The junior high school experienced significant damage that will require immediate clean up and repair.

Due to these circumstances, Junior High School students ONLY will not report to school on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. AAJHS students will have an asynchronous remote learning day. Students should check their Google Classrooms for asynchronous work to complete. Students should complete the Attendance Google Form during 1st period to check in for the day. Teachers will be available by email for instructional support and questions. Administration will update students and families tomorrow in regards to the plan for the remainder of the week. Instructional and support staff will be available at the school to answer questions.

Junior High School County Chorus will be moved to the high school. All AAJHS students who are participating should report to the high school upon arrival. Students can utilize normal district transportation or self-transport. The scheduled concert will be held at AAHS on Tuesday evening. After school practices, games, and activities will proceed as scheduled unless notified otherwise.

We appreciate the efforts of the entire Altoona Area Junior High School, Altoona Area High School, Maintenance, AASD Police Services, and Administrative staff for their professional and commendable work in dealing with today’s unexpected circumstances. We would also like to thank our students and parents for their patience and understanding.  Special thanks to the Altoona Fire Department for their immediate response and assistance in addressing the break. We will update you with the mode of instruction plan for Wednesday and Thursday by mid-day Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

Please contact Superintendent Brad Hatch, 814-946-8350, with any questions.
